We just had our third camel calf (bactrian) she looks great we left the bull in with mom and her and that seems to be doing great. Mom is very interested and is "mouthing" baby and really wanting to bond.Baby on the other hand is not wanting to stand to well. its been three hours now and no standing unless we help. she does seem to have great legs and they are strong. How long until we have to be concerned? the other calves where up by now no nursing signs yet though. Iam not that concerened but ya know you got to worry a bit. who is providing milk supplements these days?
thanks

The American Camel Company sells camel milk replacer.
Jim is also a wealth of information and loves to talk about camels.

Another good person to talk to is Gil at the Oasis Camel Dairy

I feed my camel Lama Milk Replacer. But it is very expensive. I'm going through about a bag every ten days at $45-65 dollars a bag.
Does anyone know of anything cheaper?

This place in Canada sells Camel Milk Replacer, but I don’t know anything about them other than they are using a photo from my site without asking. But they did put a link to my site.

What I used for Gobi was Land O Lakes lamb milk replacer, but they had 2 different types back then and I don’t remember which I used offhand.

As for how long it takes for a baby camel to stand up and walk. I’m not a camel breeder but Gil did tell me once, I just can’t remember what he said. I know it was something around 3 hours, which to me seemed fairly long compared to other baby animals.
I would recommend calling Gil or Jim and see what they say, I’m sure that you would learn some other good things from them too!

I can't find that land of lakes out here. How much did you pay for a 25 Ib bag?

It was about 7 years ago when I was giving it to Gobi, so even if I remembered the price it would be a lot more now. There was a place that made the milk replacer for Land O Lakes where I stopped by and picked some up on my way back from getting Gobi. This was along hwy 99 south of Stockton Ca.
I’m at work now, but when I get home in a few days I can check with the feed store that I was getting it from.

To help out the rest of us I would love to hear a little more about how things went, like how long before the baby was up?

she is up and nursing well. it did take a while before she was up though 4-6 hours. her legs looks straight and strong though. This is our breeding pairs fourth calf and fourth girl. The bull is wonderful he is very tractable even in rut and the cow is pretty good with me but can get nervous with newcomers. So all in all iam sure this calf will grow up strong.
I love Gobi

How's the little girl doing these days? It's been a while since she started nursing. Is she thriving now? Give us an update. Any pics of her and Mamma? :wave
