This breed has been developed by selective inter-breeding of Sindhi (reddish colour), Baluchi (head and stop), Afghan (hair on eyes, ears and throat) and indigenous camels.
It is a multipurpose heavily built breed. The camels of this breed are well known for draught/ transport due to their higher potential to carry loads. It could easily haul 1.5 to 2 tones of load for 8 hrs a day with rest of about 3-4 hours in between.
They have a slight dome shaped head. The forehead has well marked depression above the eyes, known as “stop”. The ‘stop’ causes the nose to tilt upwards with the forehead, this gives an alert, intelligent and dignified look.
Some camels of this breed have a luxuriant growth of hair on their eyebrows, eyelids and ears, they are called as “jheepras” in local dialect.
The coat color of this breed varies from dark brown to blackish brown or reddish brown.
The camels of this breed are of good height, strong in build and of active habits. Neck is medium sized, fairly erect, with a marked curve giving a graceful carriage to the head. They are good in milk production with average production of 4 liter / day and lactation length can go up to 14-16 months.
Adult body weight is about 527 Kg with males weighing 531.4 Kg and females 523 Kg. Camels are superior in good quality annual hair production and with average of 0.806 kg. Hair from younger age group is finer as compared to adult.

Here’s another head shot of this camel. In less than two weeks I will be in the town that these camels were named after.

Yes, that’s the breed. I took the photo when I was in Bikaner, India at the National Research Centre on Camels. They sure have some nice camels there! They take about half of the camels out into the desert each day and return them around 4:00 in the evening. Upon returning the camels come running in and run around all excited, makes for quite a sight!
Good work on Identifying the breed :applaus

Excellent! One of my friends took some of the camel tours in the north of India when she was there last year. I'd very much like to visit someday. It's on my list somewhere after the Gobi desert (I like bactrians) and Turkey (I like camel wrestling).

Have you seen the new webpage that I’ve been working, this one shows the working camels of Bikaner.
Right now you need QuickTime to view the 360VR photos. I hope to have them also working with Java soon.

After this ones done I will be doing one on the Pushkar Camel Fair and the another one for the elephants of Jaipur. When they are all done you won’t even have to leave your chair to visit these places. I can also add sound to the 360VR photos.
Don’t for get to brining me back some camel wrestling photos :notworthy

Your new webpage is amazing! It's just like being there. You should do this sort of thing for every trip you take involving camels!

I’m working on 3 new pages with 360VR photos. One is about the working camels in Bikaner, the second one is showing the camels at the Pushkar Camel fair, and the third one is about the elephants at the Amber Fort in India.
Here is the one about the elephants.

As you will see I coped the Bikaner camel page and start replacing parts of it with new photos and info.
Right now only the large 360VR QuickTime links are working.
It can take a month to do one of these pages, it’s a lot of work and I can’t say the pay’s very good! :elephant
