View Full Version : Electric Fence Energizer for Camels?

I just finished up fencing in about an acre pasture for my camel. I wasn't sure what solar energizer to get, and for the small of space, I mostly heard, "anything over $100 will do it".
I put him in his pasture yesterday evening and purposely led him to the edges to lean over and be shocked. He was very confused, and it did make him step back. But it just wasn't enough to stop him from doing it again. His fur is very thick right now, and I'm sure that's a big part of the problem.
When I woke up today, I found him still safely in his pasture, but I have a feeling I'm going to need to get a better energizer. For those of you who electrify your fences, which energizer did you buy?
I'm using 2 inch copper conductive poly-tape, one strand.

Well I just spent some time outside with him and he seems to be respecting the fence A LOT more than yesterday. He accidentally broadsided it and the shock scared him quite a bit. I was worried if he kept getting weak shocks that he wouldn't ever learn to stay off the tape. Now I may not need something stronger, but I'd still love to hear what everyone else uses just in case.

Hi Stephanie,
Tape didn't work for me for goats (before I had Boris). I don't care what the manufacturer says but the tape stretches and looses it's conductivity.
I used common wire - put it very taut (not sure of spelling on that one) and your baby will touch it only once. Boris stays at least 3 feet from the fence (and so do I!)
We use a an electric battery - not sure on the voltage but it was for goats & sheep (not strong enough for cattle), but works with Boris!
Good luck!

Thanks. Sadly I'm already out about three days of work, and a hundred bucks for this tape, so I'm hoping it works. If not, I'll have to redo the entire thing with wire. I can't see it stretching though, it's very very thick and sturdy. Though I am having a problem with it blowing in the wind and hitting things. :(

Hi
We use electric tape attached to the mains - in winter especially they don't get bothered by it. Mostly it's turned off - but once every month or so I have to turn it on as I have 2 camels who pick it up in their mouths... move it, and then spit it out on the ground - thus destroying the fencing!
Good luck - hope you're keeping them in now

Hi, we use electric fences for our internal fences. We have found them to be very effective as long as you don't leave the energizer off for long periods of time. The camels seem to test the fence periodically and if they find its off they push through the tape.
We have not had any problems with the tape stretching and becoming non-conductive. We have also used wire in our electric fences (on our permanent outer fence) and find that it also works well (although it takes longer to install).
We have bushy paddocks and find that we have to check the fence isnt being earthed by anything fortnightly. That is the only downfall.

I took all my tape down and put up wire instead. The wire installation was fast and easy... the tape not so much.
I'm not sure which is conducting better. I suppose I need to get a tester. Does anyone know how much voltage is recommended for camels? They just have such thick hair.

chargers by the biggest one you can afford! low impedance chargers are the only way to go!! jewels are the measurement of stored energy on the wire the higher the jewels the more bite the fence will have!!!!high impedance chargers (weed burners) are a joke DO NOT PURCHASE ONE!!!! if some one gives you one, put it in a yard sale!!!! Pell makes a good charger Gallagher also makes a great charger as well!!!!! both are out of new Zealand they do high tensile fence right !!!! i think the site is www.kencove.com sells wire and droppers, strainer, etc etc ... but the most important thing they sell is a little book on the proper way to build high tensile fencing by the book before you buy any thing else hope this helps post script i build fences and our entire farm is high tensile wire!! dont cut corners

buy a digital meter (there high but will last) 4.0 are higher will keep them off your fence dont forget to use the best ground rod you can get 3 ground rods 8 feet long and 16 feet apart tied together with one piece of stainless steel wire!!!! its all in the book

Hey thanks. :)
He hasn't gotten out of his pasture, so I think what I've got setup right now is doing good. If he does manage his way out, I'm going to get something a lot more powerful.
