Boris has continual access to baled grass hay and gets 2 cups of 10% protein twice daily. It's winter now so there's not much to eat from the ground. Needless to say, there's ALWAYS food around (and water too). Should I keep things that way or limit him? He's not overweight but has a very round (pregnant looking) belly. His poops are nice, firm and look like giant goat poop!

I'm a big fan of free choice hay for camels. Going into the winter you could probably even increase his grain a little.
I envy you. I live in Wisconsin and work with camels but don't yet own one of my own.

It's always up to the ways your individual camels react
Mine have free choice hay and haylage - WHICH... they absolutely love, and has done them wonders in terms of putting on weight as the nutrient content is a great deal higher.
They also have 4 double handfulls of pony nuts, and sweetcorn, barley and soya if they're needing extra protein. We add selenium to their diet here, and they always have free choice salt - about a kilo a week. If I could get hold of sugar beet easily here in France, they'd have that too, as it's a favourite of mine.
Occassionally - if it's hard to get hold of horse nuts, I buy a horse mix, with rolled oats, molasses and loads of other yummy things in - it's pricey, but really delicious

For a while I was adding sweet horse feed to Boris' diet but he was really getting "edgy" and I figured it just might be the sugar. He doesn't get much exercise - he's on his own in his pasture. Trying to get him to do anything while he was on that diet was nearly impossible.
He's very food driven (don't know if that's the right term) - when I go to him in the afternoon, if his hay troughs empty, he's really noisy and boisterous and quite unpleasant. As soon as I refill the trough, he's okay even if he doesn't eat from it right away. It seems as if he just likes to see it full.
Boris has gained quite a bit of weight since he was wormed - he looks great now but I want to be careful as he's gelded and I don't want to create a monster.
Thank you for your answers & insight!
