Hello,
Working in central Australia with 21 camels. We have a 4-5 yr old gelding with major fluid build up in both rear feet, ankles extending up to fetlock. Fluid build up in 1 foot is much more extensive. Major hair loss has also resulted on foot, ankle extending upwards. No visible pain in walking. We were advised it may be dietry but supplementing with bush foods has not improved condition:mad. This particular camel came to us very underweight with little appetite. In the last 3-4 months he has definately regained his appetite, and put on weight. Though the weight is mainly being put on in his belly region. He has virtually no hump to speak of. He has been treated for all parasites. No other camels in the yards shared and separate have any similar condition. Any knowledge of this sort of condition would be greatly appreciated. Will try and post a photo in the next few days.
Regards.

Hair loss in the rear feet is not a problem unless of course is accompanied by itch because in this case it may indicate the beginning of an attack of mange. Have you tried to provide your camel with salt? Do not use blocks use granular salt commonly used for other livestock species. Camels need a lot of salt to be healthy. If only the rear leags are swollen it may be because of the irritating action of biting insect or because ulcers caused by Dermathopilus congolensis + urine are developing.
Let me know how is going (camel4ever@fastemail.us)
