Can anyone tell me where online I can order a halter made specifically for camels? I found one at a llama supply store, but they don't take American Express, and I don't want to deal with it otherwise.

Hi there,
Maybe this isn't your cup of tea, but I recently made two halters for my camels with their own fibre. It took very little time and I spun it by hand, without using a spindle (I spun it really thick (approx. 5-6mm)). I got the idea from the film 'Story of the Weaping Camel' (the German film), and it's worked a treat. They've been using them for the last 2 months or so and they look fantastic in them.
I copied the design from a Shetland pony halter, but made a few adjustments to ensure they sit perfectly. They're also adjustable, so I expect them to last for many years and to cater for their growth.
Like I said, maybe you don't have the time or inclination to do something like this, but I managed it with my wife in the evenings as we sat here with only the TV to watch. We spun and made two in two nights, but I think that we'd have managed 5 or 6 in 4 nights if we'd have continued.
Not a massive saving in terms of money, but at 40 Euros each, it's 80 Euros that is better in my pocket than someone elses! (and I learned a little on the way too)
Wow!
I love the idea of camel-halters made of camel-wool!
Do you think they are durable and ok on the camels head/face in wet weather (rain)?
The camels I work with wear halters constantly on treks which last 1-3 weeks or longer.

P.S. Imight watch the movie again...

I'm not entirely sure about weathering of the halters I've made, but having had them for two months, through rain and shine, and having trekked for a couple of hours each day, I've no reason to expect that they'll not last for a very long time. Also, there's nothing to indicate to me that there's any problem with comfort, as far as the camel is concerned. During the first week of them wearing them I removed them each day then replaced them almost immediately, to get them used to having their faces touched and to having their halters adjusted. They both allowed me to do any amount of adjustments as I needed (this was shortly after we got the camels, so it was part of their learning programme). One point I noted is that when they started to shed on their heads, the areas under the halters shed first, I guess because of the friction of the material against the skin. Other than that there's no sign that it's at all uncomfortable.
That's all I have.
Thank you very much for your response! And for the idea.
So, there is another project on my list for next summer :king
It'll take me until January until I would have had tried it out.
But will let you know!!!
