As per my previous posts, I'm a novice camel keeper, but we're eager to try out new things.
While working with the camels yesterday I started wondering about possible uses for the hair that I've managed to collect from them over the last few weeks. I've got a carrier bag full of it.
I got thinking about the film 'The Weeping Camel' and remembered the woman of the house/yurt making a halter for the new calf (is the term calf, or is it cria..?). So I asked my 'woman of the house' if she fancied having a go. She has plenty of spinning experience from the llamas and alpacas, but we had to refer to the film for inspiration about the number of ropes to use and the thickness of those individual strands. The template for the piece has been taken from a pony halter, but with a few adjustments, primarily the nose piece, which will be a little wider than normal.
Work is now underway and I've been quoted a delivery date of tomorrow...
I wondered if anyone on this forum has other ideas for tack that can be made from camel hair?
Why we've never done it with the llamas, I don't know. I'm contemplating now the amount of money I must have spent on ropes and halters over the last 10 years and it doesn't bear thinking about. Especially bearing in mind that our llama hair is rarely used at all (my wife doesn't like knitting with it as it's a little too course (she's been spoiled with the alpaca wool!)).
