I'm looking for information on what may be required to travel with a camel.

My friend and I are contemplating riding around or across the U.S. with our horses and dog. We have thought about bringing Chris' camel also, but don't know where to look for information about what may be required for health records, etc. From all we've found, health certificates are not necessary for the horses, as we will be riding not "transporting" them across state lines. Does anyone know where we can look to see if the same holds true for the camels?

Any info would be helpful.

Thanks!

Gday,
I love the idea of traveling around the states with your camel. that is one of the six big camel trips i would like to do in the future. so I would be happy to hear how you go in the preperation and execution of it all. very interested.

Before looking into the legality of traveling with your camel, the first thing i would think about is what is the ground like that they are going to walk on, and what are you going to feed them. ie are you taking food or can the browse freely.

The camel pad is pretty soft. so sharp rocky places are out of the question. walking them on the road does wear down the pad as there is no give when the foot expands and contracts. In india they sometimes tie hessian sacks around their camels feet but usually it is when there is a problem. maybe you could make a shoe? Indian they use inner tube of a car tyre but i am sure you could ask Nike is they are up to the challenge. " impossible is nothing." hahaha

In OZ there are many wild foods that camels feed on but also some that can kill. so these are the first two things i think about when entertaining the exciting idea of traveling with camels.

cheers
