On my trip to India I saw thousands of male camels working, mostly pulling carts. I asked, “Where are all of the female camels” and was told out in the villages. When I was out in those villages I only saw male camels. They only use the male camels for draft animals and the villagers can’t afford to keep ones they can’t make money with.

So where are all of the female camels?
They have been selling camels for meat to Pakistan (Which many are against) and I’m thinking that’s where most of the female camels are ending up.

The camel population in India has drastically declined in the past few years and is likely to keep declining. Some groups are trying to promote the use of camel milk and its health benefits to reverse the situation.

How would they breed if they had no females in India?

They still have camel breeders there. Next time I go to India (which could be next month) I will try to find out what the ratios between male and female camels are. If there are less female camels, then of course I will ask why.

Rajasthan's camel population has plunged by about 50 percent over the last 10 years to below 400,000 animals as poor breeders sell female animals for slaughter, while males are kept for hauling carts.
