Hi I'm Ben and new to the forum. I do not own any camels but my wife and I have been thinking about it for several years. We have 24 acres where we presently live and have a barn with four stalls. Our fencing is vinyl and probably inadequate for camels. We did board horses here for awhile.
We would like to just fence a couple of acres around the barn with electric fence but sometimes let the camels out to graze in the rest of the pasture during the day. Some of the pasture would continue to be cut for hay. Does this sound reasonble? If not what would you recommend?
We also own some other property that has barb wire? Is this dangerous to camels? And part the land over there is hilly, would that be problem? Anyway, we would like to make sure we have all our bases covered before we buy so any help would be appreciated.

Hi! I have 10 acres, and I have slightly over an acre fenced in for my one camel.
This is working really well for me, and I feel like he has plenty of space to roam around. Sometimes I let him out onto the 10 acres, and pasture him back up at night, but usually he just has the 1 to himself.
My fencing is five strand barbless wire, and from everything I read he's supposed to have broken down and destroyed that a dozen times by now - but its working 100% fine.
I also have barbed wire on one of the sides of the fence facing the road. I did not put this up, but I did leave it there. He's never had a problem with it. Camels are a lot more of a thinking animal than a horse, and I think in general they'd do a lot better with barbs.
My land is not hilly, but this can pose a problem to camels depending on how steep it is. They don't have a lot of traction, and if it rains and gets muddy they will slide around, and maybe break a leg.

Thanks for your help, it sound like we should be in good shape here, where do you live? We live in NE Alabama near Chattanooga. I'm wondering how much hay we would need in he winter. Normally around here cattle can feed partially on pasture almost all year. But less so the past two years due to the drought. It has to lift sometime.
I know when we kept horses here they fed on grass all winter with just a little feed and supplements except for the pregnent ones. Anyway thanks.

I'm in Southeastern Arizona. I barely fed my camel during the summer and the spring. He eats literally everything, even the real tough thorny branches and cacti. But he's needed grass hay over the winter. I couldn't say exactly how much, and he still does graze (even with things really dead now, I'm in a cold area), but he gets fed daily. Its really important camels get a lot of salt, too. I have a salt block, and loose salt. He never touches the block, but eats the loose daily. I also supplement with selenium. Other than that I think you're good to go. Too much of a rich diet is bad for camels.
