Most of the camel owners that I know feed their camels alfalfa hay, sure their camels love it, it’s like feeding them candy! Camels don’t need the high protein found in alfalfa and it has been known to cause problems like bloating, which can be deadly. The pasture mix hays like oat and barley are acutely much better and healthier for camels.
When you go to the feed store ask what they have and what they would recommend for a camel or llama, also ask about the Selenium levels. You may need to give them some Selenium supplements if the hay in your area has low levels.

Rule of thumb: lowest protein content (lesser then 8%) and highest fiber content (above 12-15%) possible. And feed them never clover! My camels hate clover! My opinion: alfalfa is not made for camels, Important is not a lot of grain but employement lining. Take present that camels originaly comes from the aridest areas of this planet. Be thrifty with Supplement lining! Better are Branches from the following trees: Beech, Oak, Willow, Apple, Aspen, Ash and Maple. Take care feeding fir its contain Tannin. No night shadow plants like patatoes, tomatos. Important is adding weekly Selenium!!! Salt leak stones are also neccesary for Camels. There need 6 to 8 time more salt then other species. Notice for European breeders: We have here the lowest Selenium content in the ground. Selenium is very very important for our animals!
