I believe that they can but i have never seen a picture or vidoe of a camel actually swimming. Is there any way to get a picture or video of one swimming? All the pics I have seen look like the camel is just stadning or lying in the water.

Camels are very good swimmers, somewhere on my old computer I have a few photos showing race camels being exercised by having them swim in a special pool like they do with race horses.

Also, the US cavalry who were using camels out in the southwest during the 19th century reported that their camels crossed rivers and streams that caused their other pack animals to drown. I'll have to dig up the link to that at some point.

Mine don't swim as our water is not deep enough - but they do love our river and when It's really hot they spend their afternoons soaking their feet - it's lovely to see, and Claudia even cushes in there!! Will try to get the camera out next time as it's a fab thing to see!!
